I’m Becoming A Gym Rat!

by

I never thought it would happen – but I’ve actually joined a gym and am going on a regular basis!

I’ve always thought that I could accomplish my exercise goals at home, but alas, the older you get, the more exercise you need. I was goaded into joining 24 Hour Fitness by my boyfriend. It helps that it is really close to home and that I’m currently not working.

I’ve made a concerted effort to go at least 5 days a week and am doing 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical machines. I’ve worked up to burning about 250 calories per session. I also am doing weight work about 3 x times a week and also some weights at home during my lunch break.

After 6 weeks of religious training, I’ve lost a total of 2 pounds! Big deal! Of course, I’d like to think that I’m losing fat and gaining muscle and muscle is heavier, hence no real weight loss, but my clothes aren’t fitting any better.

I was never really overweight to begin with, but I did want to lose about 10 pounds. So 2 pounds is really disappointing.

For me, it’s all about the diet. I’m a pretty healthy eater, but the only way for me to lose weight is to dramatically cut the carbs. No bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. And no alcohol. At least until I lose the weight and then I can gradually add them back (in moderation). Unfortunately, I haven’t been all that diligent about the diet. So that’s my next step.

I guess it’s true what they say about it all being harder as you age. Harder to lose weight, harder to get back in shape, harder to stay healthy. If you are a young 40 year old reading this – heed my words! Start (or keep) those good habits now – you’ll be grateful when you’re older!

Will I still keep going to the gym? You bet! I know that diet and exercise is the best anti aging program. You can’t really accomplish much without those two disciplines being in balance.

I’ll let you know how it goes. For now, I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Tell me your story (or struggle) if you have one. I’m sure I’m not alone.

*sigh* I seriously need to get back into working out. I *love* the elliptical, but finding time to get to a gym with two active teenagers just isn\’t happening right now. Good for you for going!

Don’t feel so bad – my kids are totally grown! Yours will be too, soon enough. Don’t forget about working out when that happens!

Now I’ve gained 4 lbs. Going to try again but keep my caloric intake down and eat more vegetables. Eventhough I started exercising it seems that my hunger is increasing.

That’s very true. Gym or exercise requires dedication and some goal. Have some goals in your mind of eight weight gain or weight loss. I used to be skinny guy one year ago but i started with gym and diet and today i have a descent physique. For muscle gain, try to eat many small meals a day as good as six small meals a day.

Hang in there! And you’re right, on several counts: (1) Diet is hugely important. Try cutting back on your starchy carb portions. Eat more vegetables! And make sure you’re getting in enough lean protein to build muscle. (2) Losing fat slows down the older you get. Our bodies can’t process the types of food they used to. Stick to whole, natural foods–skip the processed stuff.

I’d urge you to push yourself with the weights. When you can get 10 reps easily with the 5 lb DBs, move up to the next poundage. Do compound movements that work a number of muscles — squats, chest presses, shoulder presses, barbell rows (for back). And have faith that your body will change!

Thanks – I’ve really been getting into the various classes lately. They’re doing a good job of kicking my butt!

I bet! What classes are you taking?

  9. GiGi on June 16th, 2010 7:07 am

Almost everything! Weight lifting, step and weights (several types of those), yoga, pilates, even Zumba. I have yet to try the spinning or cycling classes. I’ll have to work up to those.

It sounds as though you need to change the type of exercising you are doing at the gym if you want to lose more weight. Aerobics always works for me. But be careful, you say yourself you don’t really need to lose much.

I joined a gym about 8 months ago after being unable to keep up my 3 mile per day walking regimen because of a foot injury. It was quite challenging at first, but I am building stamina and have seen good results. After I finish (early in the morning for me) I drink a protein shake to get me started on my day. I put fruit and a great supplement in it plus take my other supplements and I a full of energy and go all day long. Keep it up – maybe a physical trainer can give you a few tips!
