Flax Oil Facts

Flaxseed oil comes from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum, L.). Flaxseed oil contains both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are needed for health. Flaxseed oil contains the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which the body converts into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Some researchers think that flaxseed oil might have some of the same benefits as fish oil, but the body isn’ t very efficient at converting ALA into EPA and DHA. And the benefits of ALA, EPA, and DHA are not necessarily the same. Omega-3 fatty acids, usually from fish oil, have been shown to reduce inflammation and help prevent certain chronic diseases such as heart disease and arthritis. Studies are mixed about whether flaxseed oil is useful for the same conditions.

Getting a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the diet is important. These essential fats are both examples of polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, while most omega-6 fatty acids tend to contribute to inflammation. A healthy diet should consist of roughly 2 – 4 times more omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 fatty acids. The typical American diet tends to contain 14 – 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. Many researchers believe this is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the United States.

Flaxseed — but not flaxseed oil — also contains a group of chemicals called lignans that may play a role in the prevention of cancer. Please see the flaxseed monograph for more information.

You can visit my store by clicking on my name above for more information. I don’t mind if you use articles from any of my websites. The more we work together, the more we spread the word, the bigger the demand will be for big business to grow more Natural and Organic Foods. We can’t beat big business and force them to stop producing products which cause a vast majority of America’s Health problems unless we work together. That's because they’re only after quantity and profits from mass production. Until they see the market shift and start losing money, big business will not change. That’s up to us and it’s time we demand better, safer, healthier supplements, vitamins, and food. It's the same as the gas and oil subject. If everyone bought electric cars or hybrids, the profits shift from the 100% gas powered market to the hybrid market. That helps to drives down prices and big business goes where the money is. We can show them, we the consumer's are the ones in control. That all starts with education and helping educate people who have not yet learned about these subjects.
I think it is an excellent supplement but like all supplements , it needs to be managed and moderated. It is also important to do your research because not all products are the same. Some people here have talked about sleep aids. I have been experimenting with Valerian for stress relief and sleep inducement and it is incredible

Yes, I also check that the fish oil I'm taking has a good amount of DHA and EPA (when comparing prices also), and I also sometimes rotate between fish oil supplements and flax seed oil, another way to get omega 3's. Also, I wish that most companies will declare the fact that they test their fish oil for content as well as for mercury for some assurance of purity and lack of pollutants. but yes, fish oil is essential for anti aging benefits for both heart and mind.

I've just got back into taking my Omega 3s. My current brand (which I'm very happy with) contains 210mg of EPA and 150mg of DHA so falls into the moderate dosage band. I've also started taking Zinc and Magnesium tablets before bed and the improvement in my quality of sleep is immense.
