Breaking News – Coke and Pepsi To Go Against The FDA?
by GiGi
This is news! Coca Cola is launching a new drink this week with an ingredient in it that is not FDA approved.
The new drink is a non-carbonated juice containing a natural, calorie-free sweetener made from the herb stevia.
Pepsi also has several drinks ready to go that contain stevia. The FDA has approved stevia only as a dietary supplement, but labeled it an “unsafe food additive” in 1991 because some studies suggested adverse health effects from stevia-based products.
Stevia’s been around a long time. Native to Paraquay, it’s been used for centuries in South America to make a sweet herbal tea. Japan now uses it and even has their diet coke sweetened with it. However, the FDA cites a 32 year old study with possible reasons not to approve it. These people have their own refute to the FDA: Stevia Study.
I’ve been using Stevia for some time now. (I get it at Trader Joe’s) I kept reading horrible things about aspartame and splenda – funny, how they got approved! At least with Stevia, I don’t get the headaches I was having with Aspartame.
You might remember my post about my question to the IFIC about artificial sweeteners. If not: Low Calorie Sweetener Question. You already know I’m not a big fan of the FDA.
The good news out of all this is that maybe with the BIG guys of Coca Cola and Pepsico fighting the battle, little Stevia will finally get a chance to play with the other low calorie sweeteners.

Thanks for letting us know about this. The FDA is a necessary evil, but seems to be a bit backward in approving some products. Perhaps with the big companies pressing for the use of Stevia, more research will be done validating years of anecdotal evidence supporting its safety. Nothing is ever 100% safe for everyone, but then, neither is life! We can’t be protected from everything all the time, and need to be able to make informed choices.

I’ve never tried stevia. Is it available in supermarkets? What does it taste like?

I get it at Trader Joe’s. I haven’t seen it in regular stores yet.
I’ve only used it in my coffee or tea and it’s fine for that. Like all sweeteners, it’s an acquired taste.
Wow! That is like ground breaking! Maybe Coke and Pepsi actually are supplying what the public wants!? And they are taking a big risk to do so! Good for them! I can’t wait to taste it!
I truly believe the FDA does not have our best interests in mind. Their pocket books come first!
@Tom Parker
Stevia is available in liquid and powdered form. I think it actually tastes a lot like nutra-sweet. At least closer to Nutra Sweet than regular sugar but definitely better tasting than NutraSweet! I find you really don’t need much when using it!

Nice article. I believe the sweeteners in question is Truvia for Coca-Cola and PureVia for PepsiCo. Also, it’s good to note that these are Stevia-based sweeteners only.

I think all this incredients which substitute sugar can not be good for the human body. I drink clear water all the day and miss nothing. I’m fine and healthy without coke
aha, so coka cola will bring a new drink again! Coka Cola Zero reachs to my opinion. I don´t know why they still look after new sweeteners.
