Hmm...I haven't heard of eating it raw..it's generally used as an herb, usually ground. I did come across this on another site:
"I was diagnosed with a pretty severe inflammatory disease of the joints a year ago and was heavily medicated on various high-priced drugs that didn't help at all. By a stroke of luck I found turmeric root in my local supermarket and started chewing the root in one-inch pieces every day. Every single symptom I had simply VANISHED within two days. I keep eating it every day and haven't had any problems since, except for when I stop taking it. Then the symptoms come back within a few days. I try to make everyone I know aware of the health benefits of this amazing root."

I take a pinch of Turmeric with either Coffee or Tea or Milk or Horlicks two times a day. It helps reduce the severity of colds/cough that i am prone to. I dont want to take a tea spoon or tablespoon twice a day. My guess is that it would be too much, since i am from India and its added to a variety of foods that we consume regularly.

Mixing one tablespoon of tumeric is not going to help because of the bioavailability of tumeric. it is known for low absorbent and is hard to break down when it enters your stomach.

Large amount will usually cause irritation to your bowel.
